Mount Somers, unlike many country towns in New Zealand, has an economy that has not been completely agricultural. Many of the first industries in the town included coal, clay, sand, and limestone. These materials have been mined in the hills behind the town from as early as 1885 until 1968. During this time, the Mount Somers Branch railway served the community and its industries from the Main South Line and this railway was key to the exports of the town.

The plateau-like poorly drained summit of Mount Somers, combined with low soil fertility and high rainfall, makes this a perfect botanical spot, which provides an ideal habitat for many bog species of wildlife.
