The Mount Cook National Park is New Zealand’s greatest alpine park. It was first
formally named as a national park back in 1953, from the reserves that were established as early as 1887. This move was made in order to protect the area’s significant vegetation and landscape.
The Mount Cook National Park is now the home of the Mount Cook Village. This is a popular tourist centre, and settlement that makes up the main base camp for the mountain.
In 1851, Captain John Lort Stokes named the Mount Cook area in honour of Captain James Cook. Cook was the explorer who first surveyed and circumnavigated the islands of New Zealand in 1770 and is a well known figure in New Zealand’s history. In 1998, the name was altered to accommodate the Maori name for the mountain, and since then, the area has been more commonly referred to as Aoraki / Mount Cook. This was agreed after the settlement between Ngāi Tahu and the Crown.
