The small town of Arthur’s Pass is found nestled in the stunning Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand, and the town was previously known as Camping Flat then Bealey Flats, and now it has been known for some time officially as Arthur’s Pass. The town and the accompanying pass are named after Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson.

The town was originally built as a village to house the contractors who were hired for the building of the Otira Tunnel. This project started on 14 January 1908.

There was initially am issue with the town’s name because New Zealand’s Geographic Board had a policy of omitting apostrophe in place names. As a result, the town had to be known for a long time as Arthur’s Pass. This caused the towns residents to be upset about the name, and after many appeals to the board, the Minister of Lands reinstated the old version with the apostrophe.

To each Arthur’s Pass by train, visitors should tak the famous Midland Line. If traveling by car however, the busy State Highway 73 passes through the town too, so it’s quite easy to reach Arthur’s Pass accommodation.
